Albay is all set for the grand staging of the month-long 2014 Daragang Magayon Festival, which kicks off last week of March, fired up by the province’s recent successes in the field of tourism.
Daragang Magayon Festival relieves the origin of Mayon Volcano. The festival features sports and cultural events and trade fairs. The focus of the month-long event is the stage reenactment of the tragic love story of the legend of Daragang Magayon and Panganoron whose fatal deaths gave birth to the volcano. Legend has it that Magayon’s grave became Mayon while the clouds kissing her is Panganoron.
Albay Gov. Joey Salceda said Magayon Festival was elevated to world-class standard as more and more foreign tourists come in by the AIG or the normal route, with the province now considered as the new tourism giant in Luzon.
The Daragang Magayon Festival was renamed last year from the former Magayon Festival, one of the country’s top five festivals, which derives its origin from the legend of Mayon Volcano. Daragang Magayon literally means ‘Beautiful Maiden.’
Salceda said Daragang Magayon Festival will treat visitors this year to more exciting events, including the much-awaited Parade of Higantes (Giants) of “Mythos kan Albay,” the festival showdown of all winning street dancers and presentors from other festivals of the Bicol Region, and the Mutya ng Daragang Magayon Beauty Pageant, which had already produced several international beauty titlists, among others.
Festival organizers have prepared a list of outdoor activities for visitors, like Whale Shark (Butanding) Interactions, a 360-degree run around Mayon Volcano, the ATV adventures, mountain climbing, and trips to various tourism sites in the province.Read full article here…
